Enhancing Dental Care
Founded in 1944, the Dental Association of Malta (DAM) is the country’s leading non-profit and non-governmental scientific body representing the vast majority of registered dental surgeons in Malta. Today, it speaks on behalf of 85–90% of the profession, and is governed by a nine-member executive committee elected on a two-year basis. The committee meets regularly each month to direct the Association’s work and uphold its mission.
Our Mission & Objectives
DAM’s objectives have always centered on the promotion of the dental profession, the safeguarding of ethical standards, and the protection of dentists’ rights at both governmental and regulatory levels. The Association also plays a central role in advancing professional development, offering postgraduate lectures, courses, and conferences that provide members with valuable continuing education opportunities. Its official journal, The Dental Probe, documents key events and CPD highlights for the profession.

Our History
The Association is headquartered at the Federation of Professional Associations in Gzira and was among the founding bodies of the Malta Federation of Professional Associations. Over the decades, DAM has forged strong international links, maintaining affiliations with the Council of European Dentists (CED), the Federation of European Dental Competent Authorities and Regulators (FEDCAR), the World Dental Federation (FDI), and the Commonwealth Dental Association. These connections have allowed Maltese dentists to remain aligned with European and global standards.
Advocacy & Public Impact
DAM has consistently been active in public debate on matters of patient safety and professional regulation. It has cautioned against the growing trend of low-quality dental tourism, particularly in Turkey, where improperly executed cosmetic procedures have led to serious complications. The Association has also raised strong objections to the “fast-tracking” of non-EU dentists at Mater Dei Hospital without adequate vetting, warning that such practices were “highly unsafe.”
Historically, DAM’s growth was shaped by influential leaders, none more so than Dr. John H. Mercieca, who served first as Secretary from 1947 to 1961, then as President until 1981, before becoming Honorary Life President. His four decades of service left an enduring legacy on the professionalism and structure of dentistry in Malta.
Professional Development & Regulation
Beyond its advocacy, DAM also contributes directly to the training and regulation of the profession. Working alongside the Health Department and the Dental Training Committee, it sets the criteria for general professional training in Malta, which culminates in the Certificate of Completion of General Professional Training (CCGPT).
Partnerships & International Affiliations
Throughout the years, DAM has nurtured collaborations both locally and abroad. In 2012, it partnered with Vodafone Malta to provide members with mobile and internet benefits, reflecting its commitment to enhancing professional life as well as clinical standards. Today, it continues to lobby government bodies and European institutions on matters of professional standards, patient safety, and regulatory alignment.
Our Legacy & Future Vision
With a proud history stretching back to 1944, the Dental Association of Malta remains the authoritative voice of Maltese dentists. Through its commitment to education, advocacy, and international cooperation, DAM has shaped the profession’s development across generations and continues to safeguard its future.

Core Principles
Our core values revolve around excellence, integrity, and commitment to advancing the dental profession for the benefit of both practitioners and patients.
